Product Details

A mid-19th century portrait of a young seated gentleman in a black suit and cravat. A label for the frame maker 'Wyatt & Sons' verso with the address stated as '115 High Street, Oxford'; this address was used between 1849-1850 only, which helpfully dates this work no later than that period.

The portrait is extremely well executed with wonderful use of light and tone. When inspected closely under bright light, small areas of paint loss can be seen and the work would benefit from a professional clean (please see photographs). The work remains striking and attractive.

The work is housed in a carved gilt wood frame which remains in very good condition throughout.

Numerous reference and lot numbers verso. By repute, one of the lot numbers relates to a Sotheby's sale which listed this work as attributed to Stephen Pearce (1819-1904). Note we have contacted Sotheby's to verify this but they have been unable to locate the work in their archives.
