FORGING A CHEFS KNIFE
For centuries kitchen knives have been hand forged in smithies and in Britain we have always had a strong tradition of steel work and blade making. We would like this tradition to continue - so this course looks at Western style chef’s knives, how they are forged and how handles are fitted. A great combination of blacksmithing and woodwork.
Spend the weekend forging your own chef’s knife, then take it home and start cooking.
DAY 1 : Forging high carbon steels (EN9 and EN42J) to make your knife blank. Start the heat treating cycles ready for hardening and grinding.
DAY 2 : The morning will be spent blade profiling, heat treating and grinding. This is followed by handle fitting and final sharpening.
You will go home with a beautiful personalised chef’s knife that is ready to use.
TIMES : Day 1 : 9am - 6pm Day 2 : 10am - 5pm
MEALS - A simple lunch will be provided on both days, as well as tea and coffee throughout the day.
CAMPING AND ACCOMMODATION - There is camping at COPPET HILL CAMPING (walking distance from the forge) or else plenty of local accommodation available .
