James Clarke (British, 1858-1943) oil on canvas portrait of a sporting chestnut horse in a stable, signed lower right 'James Clarke SnR' and 'JC' monogrammed to the towel on the left.
The work is housed in its original maple frame which has losses to the right side and wear commensurate with age throughout. The canvas of the work itself has craquelure throughout and a few small paint losses in areas. The varnish is matte in areas with surface dirt present. The work nonetheless remains attractive and striking.
