A stunning George II Chippendale Period mahogany bureau bookcase, possibly Irish, c.1760. The bookcase has a later bramah lock and key, the marks on which date it to c.1871.

The piece is finely made with a blind fretwork frieze below a triangular arched fretwork pediment over two attractive and delicately glazed doors enclosing shelves, each of which rest upon four adjustable brass pegs. The bookcase doors retain their original handblown glass throughout, which is full of bubbles and character. The bookcase sits above a two long and two short drawer chest with a fall front top which opens upon green baize lined supports, to reveal a comprehensive fitted writing interior with a lockable cupboard flanked by carved pillars, eight pigeon holes adorned with fretwork and four finely formed drawers.

The piece has had some restoration to the top pediment and there are signs of minor historic restoration to of the base. There is wear commensurate with age in areas, most notably above the left fall front support. The piece remains in a good solid condition overall and is an extremely attractive example.

PROVENANCE: 18th century manor house, Co. Carlow, Ireland.
